James Hardin Deweese

July 2, 1937 — May 25, 2019

Mr. James Hardin Deweese, age 81, a resident of Columbia, passed away Saturday morning, May 25, 2019 at Poplar Estates surrounded by his loving family.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at 11AM at Heritage Funeral Home with Rick Points officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery with full military honors provided by the United States Marine Corps. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 from 4-8PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Born on July 2, 1937 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, James was the son of the late James McGinnis Deweese and the late Mary Miller Deweese. He married Rachel Deweese on December 11, 1959; she preceded him in death on January 2, 2019. James retired as a Sargent Major from the United States Marine Corps after serving for forty-three years.

He worked as a camera man for WKRN Channel 2 where he covered many Vanderbilt football and basketball games. While there, he was a camera man for Romper Room and also starred as Bozo the Clown . He later began working for Nashville Network, now known as CMT, where he did various camera jobs for Hee Haw, Farm Aid, and Diamond P Sports . James later transferred to Maury Regional Medical Center where he worked as a nurse technician and eventually retired. After retirement, he worked on the janitorial staff for the Columbia Police Department and as a crossing guard for Riverside Elementary School.

James was an outdoorsman who enjoyed doing yardwork and going fishing. He was an avid New York Yankees baseball fan and Notre Dame Fighting Irish football fan. He was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his sons: Mark Deweese of Nashville, Jamie Deweese of Columbia and Bryan (Christy) Deweese of Columbia; grandchildren: Destiny Deweese and SPC Dylan Deweese; one great grandchild: Paislee Meade; sisters: Helen Holland of Ashland City, and Bess Bond of Allen, TX; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Robert Deweese, Ann Plante, Charles Deweese, Mary Joyce Kopeck, and Bonnie Gail Deweese.

Pallbearers will be: SPC Dylan Deweese, Chucky Deweese, Dusty Lemoine, Anthony Armstrong, Jacob Estes, and Debbie Decker.

Honorary pallbearers will include: the staff at Poplar Estates and the employees at WKRN.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the John Wayne Foundation: 210 62 nd Street, Newport Beach, CA 92663 of to the United States Department of Veteran Affairs: 810 Vermont Avenue NW, Washington DC, 20420.
