James Robert “Bob” Harlan, age 67, passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at his home in Hampshire, Tennessee surrounded by his loving family.
Born on May 10, 1957, to Allen Dorset Harlan, Jr. and Elizabeth "Betty" Gennoe Harlan, Bob was raised in Maury County and spent his life on his beloved family farm along the Duck River. He graduated from Central High School in 1975, earned his degree from Middle Tennessee State University in 1979, and went on to complete his law degree at the University of Tennessee College of Law in Knoxville in 1982. Bob was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Columbia, Tennessee.
A lifelong resident, Bob was a cornerstone of the Maury County community, practicing law for 42 years. He dedicated his life to serving others, not only through his legal career but also through his volunteer work, notably as a board member of Harvest Share Food Bank for many years. Bob had a deep love for the outdoors and spent countless joyful hours on the family farm. He was also a talented craftsman who created exceptional custom furniture in his woodshop.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Betty Harlan, and his brother, Dorset Harlan. He is survived by his daughter, Megan Harlan Quillen, son-in-law, Philip Robert Quillen, and his two beloved grandchildren, Olivia Hazel Quillen and Liam Harlan Quillen. He is also survived by his brother, George Jefferson "Jeff" Harlan (Mary Jo), sister, Joanne Ewing (Jack), cousins Gerry Lundgren (Dan) and Holly Harlan, as well as many nieces and nephews. Beyond family, Bob cherished lifelong friendships with remarkable people whose bonds stood the test of time.
Bob's legacy of kindness, service, and craftsmanship will continue to inspire all who knew him.
The family will hold a private celebration of life service at a later date on the family farm.
