James C. Massey, age 90, a resident of Columbia, passed away Friday, July 3, 2020 at his residence.
Funeral services for Mr. Massey will be held on Tuesday, July 7 th at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Home with Eric Nichols officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Freedom at Maury Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by the United States Air Force. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 1:00 till service time at Heriage Funeral Home.
Born September 22, 1929 in Selma, AL, he was the son of the late James M. and Alvis Morris Massey and husband of Emma Champion Massey. Serving in the US Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam Era, he retired after 30 years as a Chief Master Sargent with a Bronze Star Medal. Mr. Massey was also the Quality Control Specialist for Air Force One under President Richard Nixon. When he retired, he pursued his passion of raising cattle back in Selma. He moved to Columbia in 1996. Mr. Massey liked to hunt, fish, gardening and watching old John Wayne movies. He always wanted to be a cowboy.
In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his adoring daughters: Jessica (Dennis) Adams of Mt. Shasta, CA and Teresa (David) Wood of Columbia; a sister: Alice Pearce of Selma, AL; seven grandchildren: Ryan Massey, Justin Massey, Jennifer Williams, Kerryann Barnes, Michael Massey, Marissa Massey and Lydia Wood; several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons: James Massey and David Massey; a granddaughter: Rebekah Wood; a sister: Doris Quarles.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the children’s charity of your choice.
