Mr. James W. Perkins, Sr., age 78, a resident of Columbia passed away Sunday, January 19, 2020 at Maury Regional Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at 12PM at Heritage Funeral Home with Apostle Stanley Garrett officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Crest Memorial Gardens. A visitation will also be held on Saturday from 11AM-12PM at Heritage Funeral Home who is assisting the family with arrangements.
Born on December 7, 1941 in Columbia, James was the son of the late Roy Perkins, Sr. and the late Minnie Witherspoon Perkins. He worked as a custodian for the New York Board of Education for 30 years before retiring. James was a member of Rebirth Fellowship Worship Center in Columbia. He married Ellen Johnson on May 5, 1996. James was a kind and gentle man who would make you laugh with some of the things he said and with the gestures he made. He had a special love for his and his wife’s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also did a lot for his nieces and nephews. He enjoyed sports but had a special love for baseball. James never turned down a good meal, and enjoyed eating out and spending quality time with his family. He had a special love for animals and especially his two dogs, Co-Co and Princess.
In addition to his loving wife Ellen, whom he adored and was married to for almost 24 years, he leaves behind to cherish his memory his children: Venus (Rodney) Boston of Nashville, Rolanda D. Perkins of Smyrna, James W. (Maggie) Perkins, Jr. of Murfreesboro, Michael Johnson of Far Rock-a-way Queens, MaShawn Johnson of the Bronx, NY; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren & nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by all of his siblings: William D. “W.D” Perkins, Hazel Perkins, Marshall Perkins, Roy Perkins, Roosevelt Perkins, Andrew Perkins, Eugene “Gene” Perkins, Charles Perkins, and Mary Perkins Satterfield, his sister.
Pallbearers will be: Don Dooley, Michael Parks, Tyrone Wallace, Rodney Boston, Sr., Rodney Boston, Jr., & Dale White, with Flower girls: Patrice Boston, Tyrina Saunders, & Thaley Paloyd.
