James Houston Howell, “Jimmy”, age 84, resident of Columbia, passed away Sunday, June 5, 2022 at Williamson Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 9 th at 11:00 AM at Heritage Funeral Home with Pastor Matthew Traver officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Jimmy was born October 1, 1937, in Maury County and was the son of the late James H. Howell and the late Lorene Cantrell Howell. He loved car racing and worked in Coo Coo Marlin’s pit crew. He enjoyed building race cars and traveling place to place racing. Jimmy retired from Dupont Chemical Company after working for close to 50 years. He had been transferred to Delisle, MS to help there after the Columbia plant burned. Due to health reasons, he came back home to Columbia and started doing maintenance work for different real estate companies in Columbia, which he enjoyed. Most of all, Jimmy loved reading the Bible and teaching the Men’s Sunday School Class at Northside Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Hendrix Howell; daughter, Christy Lynn Henson; sisters, Libby Cummings of Cookeville, TN, Debbie (Bill) Saxman of Savannah, GA, and Barbara Cheek of Columbia; grandsons, Jessie Williams, Kane (Amy) Henson, and David (Lenisha) Henson; special niece, Elaine Glenn; great grandchildren, Kinsley and Gage Henson and Kaecyn, Huck Henson; sister-in-law, Mary Womack, whom he loved to quiz on Bible subjects; several other special nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a very special friend, Richard Crawford of 15 years whom Jimmy was a mentor to and loved him as a son.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his son, James Eddie Howell; step daughter, Ginger Blake Williams; sister, Dalton McPeak; and infant brother H.L. Howell.
Pallbearers will be Jessie Williams, Kane Henson, David Henson, Rick Crawford, James Williams, Jerry Glenn, Kenny McDonald, and Brandon Cushion. Honorary pallbearers will be Northside Baptist Sunday School Class, Mike Howell, Keith Buckner, Johnny Stanfill, Richie Glenn, Dr. Jamie Slandzicki, and Jimmy Daniels.
