Larry deserves to be recognized for his dedication and outstanding service to the Sheriff’s Office and to the citizens of SLO County, California. Larry was the father of Deputies Matt and Pete Davis. The Sheriff’s Office received word that he had passed away October 14, 2021 in Tennessee, where he resided with his wife Deborah Davis.
Born on June 23, 1950, in Sanger, California, Larry was the son of the late Winford Davis and the late Bezzie Milley Davis. Larry Davis was a graduate of Arroyo Grande High School class of 1968 and a veteran of the United States Airforce.
Larry was hired by Sheriff L.R. Mansfield, as a deputy sheriff in December of 1974. His 29-year career encompassed assignments as a deputy sheriff assigned to jail booking, patrol deputy, narcotics detective, homicide detective, K-9 handler, internal affairs, jail supervisor and commander of the south station and finally of the detective division. He was one of two deputies chosen by Sheriff George Whiting to start a new K-9 program in the 1980’s. Larry and his K-9 partner “Sheik” worked patrol together for many years until “Sheik’s” retirement in 1987. He was promoted to sergeant and lieutenant by Sheriff Ed Williams and to commander by Sheriff Pat Hedges. Larry’s two sons, Pete and Matt followed in their father’s footsteps when they both joined the sheriff’s office, first as correctional officers and later as deputy sheriffs. Larry retired from the Sheriff’s Office in January 2004 after having had an extraordinary career. He was a friend and mentor to a generation of deputies who would eventually rise through the ranks of the Sheriff’s Office to hold positions of leadership and responsibility within the organization.
Larry was an avid hunter, gun collector, and he never missed an opportunity to tell a story of all his adventures in life. He loved to debate just about anything, and having meaningful conversations was one of his favorite things to do. Above all, and most importantly, he was a beloved husband and father who loved Jesus.
