Mr. Lynn Charles Nelson, Sr., age 81, husband of Sue Nelson, and a resident of Columbia, Tennessee, passed away Sunday, February 13, 2022, at Maury Regional Medical Center.
A visitation will be held at Columbia First United Methodist Church on Saturday, February 19, 2022, from 2:00 – 3:00 PM with a memorial service beginning at 3:00 PM with Pastor Lee Stevenson officiating. Masks are encouraged. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Born on April 5, 1940, in Pontiac, Michigan, Lynn was the son of the late Lawrence Nelson and the late Margaret Morearty Nelson. He married Sue Rhew on September 1, 1962, and together they had three children. He worked as a tradesman for General Motors and was one of the first five permanent employees who transferred to Columbia. He worked in Corporate Communications at General Motors before retiring in March of 2000. Lynn was a strong union member and was a member of the Local 1853 in Tennessee and the Local 596 in Michigan. After retirement, he was a substitute teacher for the Maury County Public School System for eighteen years.
Lynn was a strong Christian and a devoted member of Columbia First United Methodist Church where he was a long-time choir member. He was actively involved in the Democratic Party including serving as a past chairman of the Maury County Democratic Party, a member of the Maury County Election Commission, and the Maury County Planning/Zoning Commission, along with work with the Boys and Girls Club.
He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He loved sports, especially the Detroit Tigers, Redwings, Predators, and Tennessee Titans, and in his younger years, he was a little league baseball coach. Lynn loved to garden, from which he made amazing homemade salsa. Lynn will be remembered by his jokes and sense of humor.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Lawrence “Larry” Nelson of Hohenwald, TN, Lynn Charles Nelson, Jr. of Bowling Green, KY, daughter, The Honorable Lisa (David) VandenBerg of Phoenix, AZ, sister, Carol Nelson of Waterford, MI, grandchildren, Larry (Jessie) Nelson, Jr., Matthew Nelson, Ashley Nelson, Abigail (Joshua) Brooks, great grandchildren, Emma, Aubree, Carlie, and Jacob Nelson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Helen Clement, Shirley Rulkowski, Hazel Stileski, and Gary Nelson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made in a financial gift in honor of Lynn to the People’s Table or the Chancel Choir Fund both with Columbia First United Methodist Church by mail at 222 West 7 th Street, Columbia, TN 38401.
