The Maury County native, born May 7, 1930, was the daughter of the late Thomas Sidney Black and Minnie Pearl Rummage Black. She was a graduate of Spring Hill High School and Nashville Business College. After moving to Memphis, Tennessee, she began her career working at a Saving & Loan Company. While there, she met and married Bill Wright. Later, they moved to Mississippi where she lived most of her adult life.
Oma obtained a position with Senator John C. Stennis of Mississippi in 1972. In February 1976 she accepted an appointment with the US District Court in Jackson, MS until her retirement from the Federal Government in March 2000 after twenty-four years of employment. Her early retirement was spent caring for two very good friends who were ill.
In 2013 Oma decided to return to Columbia to be closer to her family. She was a kind lady who only saw the good in everyone. Oma was a true “Southern Lady.” She was a member of the Pleasant Heights Baptist Church, lived at The Lakes Apartments, Morning Pointe Assisted Living, and then NHC Maury Regional Transitional Care Center.
Oma was the last of thirteen children, preceded in death by her sisters, Zelphia Jane Hardison Pogue, Bertha Mae Derryberry, Laminza Derryberry, Jennie Lee Harwell, Sarah Ann Dooley, Minnie Elsie Fitzgerald, Mary Ellen Chunn Hutcherson, Susie Elizabeth Jamison and brothers, Wilburn Howard Black, Roy James Black, Harlon Portor Black, and William Chesley Black.
She is survived by several nieces, nephews, including her guardian and niece Juanita (Jim) Riddle, and her God Children. She has many dear friends in Mississippi.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of Morning Pointe of Columbia, NHC Maury Regional Transitional Care Center, and Caris Healthcare Tennessee for the kind and loving care rendered.
Memorials may be made to Jones Cemetery, c/o Barbara Harmon, 2036 North Lasea Road, Spring Hill, 37174.
