Born on May 18,1932, in Maury County, Ruby was the daughter of the late Grady Dewey Jack and the late Tinie Baker Jack. She was the middle child of five. She attended Theta Elementary School and graduated from Spring Hill High School. On October 23, 1954, she married Thomas Edward Jacobs. Shortly after their marriage, he was drafted into the Korean War. While he was serving his country, she worked as a teletype operator at Newhoff Packing Company in Nashville, TN.
Being the middle child, she always had hand me down clothes and shoes. She always said when she went to work, she was going to buy her a new pair of shoes and a new outfit when she got paid. She held true to this and continued to treat herself the rest of her life. In 1960, their first child, Edwina, was born and she never returned to public work. Fourteen months later, their second child, Patsy, was born. She loved being the doting mother. She kept busy raising a large garden, canning what was raised, keeping a spotless house, helping Ed on the farm, and raising beautiful flowers, which was her passion. Over the sixty-seven years of marriage, she cooked over 71,000 meals. She and Ed brought up the girls in church. Every Sunday it was pancakes for breakfast as it made a very busy morning getting her two girls, husband and herself dressed. The family attended West Point Cumberland Presbyterian Church for over fifty years. She is a member of Knob Creek Baptist Church. While attending Knob Creek Baptist Church, she participated in The People’s Table. Ruby was a member of Knob Creek Demonstration Club. She loved going to gospel singings, and she and Edwina would drive miles to attend singings.
She never met a stranger. Her smile was infectious. Her petite size and laughter made everyone she met fall in love with her. In 1984, her only grandchild, Brandi, was born. On Fridays, she would take her to the beauty shop and grocery store. This was their special day. Over the past several years, Thursdays were their day as Brandi came to see her when she finished work.
Left behind to cherish her memory is her daughter, Patsy (Jans) Hedrick, granddaughter, Brandi (Chris) Bolton, sister, Iris Daniels, brother, Gary (Judy) Jack, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Edward “Ed” Jacobs on September 22, 2021, daughter, Edwina Joyce Jacobs on September 21, 2021, sister and brother in law, Carlton and Gloria Flowers, brother and sister in law, Donald and Peggy Jack, sister in law, Kay Jack and brother in law, Albert Daniels.
Pallbearers will be Chris Jack, Ronnie Jack, Mike Layne, Adam West, Brandon Bone, and Robert Pogue.
Honorary pallbearers will include Anita Norwood, Betty Savage, Margie Owens, Lois Lindsey, Jane Fitzgerald, and Jean Thomason.
The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers, who became like family, that cared for Ed and Ruby over four years, Melissa White, Shannon Ellis, Judy Moncrief, Bailey Bone, Jennifer Bradley, Ashley Glass, Caleigh Davis, and Kay Lott, and the staff of Avalon Hospice.
Memorial donations may be made to First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 1106 Nashville Highway, Columbia, TN 38401.
