Mr. Samuel Vernon Barnes, I, age 78, husband of Vedah Hall Barnes, and a resident of Hernando, Florida, previously of Culleoka, Tennessee, passed away Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at Bravera Seven Rivers in Crystal River, Florida.


A visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, from 1:00 – 3:30 PM at Heritage Funeral Home. A funeral service will also be held on Wednesday at 3:30 PM at the funeral home with Gary Townsend and Sam Barnes officiating. Military hoors will be provided by the United States Army. He will be laid to rest in Rehoboth Cemetery in Albion, Indiana. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.


Born on December 3, 1943, in Hamilton, Ohio, Samuel was the son of the late Orville C. Barnes and the late Alma Parrett Barnes. He was a proud Vietnam veteran from the United States Army and the United States Air Force. Samuel was a two-time Purple Heart recipient and while in the Army, worked as a contractor for the CIA. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami in Ohio and his master’s degree from the University of Phoenix. He previously worked as a college professor in Ohio and most recently worked over thirty years for General Motors. In his younger years, Samuel was an ordained minister. He served as a mason and a President of the UAW in Hamilton, Ohio. Above everything else, family was Samuel’s top priority. He loved his family more than anything, and he will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.


In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Charles (Margie Santos) Robison, Patrick (Susan) Robison, Samuel (Lori) Barnes, II, David (Crystal Stevens) Barnes, daughter, Sandra (Vinny) Grippi, sister, Betty Yenetchi, grandchildren, Adrea, Rebecca, and Jake Robison, Jennifer, Jonathan, and Melissa Robison, Geno and Victoria Grippi, Samuel and Lilly Barnes, Matthew Wilson, Emery, Ainsley, and Caden Barnes; and one great grandchild.


Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Orville Barnes, Jr.


Pallbearers will be Charles Robison, Sam Barnes, David Barnes, Vinny Grippi, Geno Grippi, and Samuel Barnes. Honorary pallbearers will include Vietnam Veterans and General Motors auto workers.
