Shirley May Washington

Shirley May Washington, age 91, a resident of Columbia, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at her residence.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, April 25, 2021 at 3:30 PM at Heritage Funeral Home with Brother Roderic Bryson. The body will lie in state on Sunday from 1:30 PM until the service at the funeral home.  Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Born on February 10, 1930 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Shirley was the daughter of the late Eulice Cook and the late Adrine Haggens Cook. After completing high school, she began pursuing her career as a beautician. She also worked as a nurse’s aide in Chicago and for Northrop where they built a stealth fighter plane. Shirley was a wonderful mother to her four children. They could go to her about anything, and she was always there for them.

She is survived by her son, Graylin Lee Washington of Columbia; daughter, Erania Taylor of Columbia; six grandchildren; and a host of great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, William David Washington and daughter, Charlotte Sept.
