Velma Mae Clark Staggs McGaw, age 82, a resident of Columbia, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at her residence.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 11AM at Heritage Funeral Home with Rick Points officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Nebo Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Friday, March 22, 2019 from 4-8PM and again on Saturday from 10-11AM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Born on April 18, 1936 in Maury County, Velma was the daughter of the late Velton Clarence Clark and the late Myrtle Bell Pruitt Clark. She attended Woodrow School, Columbia Central High School, and the OEO School in Maury County. She previously worked as a certified nursing tech, was a cook at Stan’s Restaurant, and retired from Rosewood Manor in the housekeeping department. Velma was of the Pentecostal faith, and she and her husband, Austin, taught Sunday School at Williamsport Baptist Church for many years. Velma was a lover of flowers and gardening. She loved listening to gospel music, watch Matlock and The Waltons and Shepherd’s Chapel . Velma especially loved her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandbaby.

She is survived by her children: Bessie Mae Staggs (David) Schmidt of Columbia, Abbie Gail Staggs (Walt) Grimes of Columbia; sister: Dorothy Clark Wilhoite; grandchildren: Tasha Renee (Bryan) Street, Angela Velucinda Wilhoite, Tonya Carol Maxwell, Audra Francis Todd, Bud Hugh Todd, Virginia Starr Todd, Corie Grimes Randall, Cameron Edward Schmidt, James Taylor, Cristian Joy Taylor, Brittany Nichole Taylor; and great grandchildren: Johnathon Michael (Tess) Hooper, Jayslyn Nichole Hooper, Austin Dowdy, Jacey Randall, Shawna Dowdy, Ciara Todd, Madison McCandless, Isabella Todd, Devin Street, Bryan Street, Jr.; great great grandchild: Luke Hooper; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husbands: Austin Staggs in 1979 and William McGaw in 1985; children: Charles Harlen Staggs, Elsie Faye Staggs, Elaine Staggs, Joyce Ann Staggs Simmons, Dora Belle Staggs Rankin; and siblings: Rosie Clark Kennedy, Pearlene Clark, and Paul Clark.

Pallbearers will be: Johnathon Hooper, Charles Kennedy, Robert Geery, Herschel Brennon, Bryan Street, and T.J. McCandless.

The family would like to extend a thank you to Dr. Gaylon Harris, Dr. Thomas Farmer, and the nurses, techs, and physical therapists that help her from First Quality Homecare.
