Walter Lee Hall was born on January 9, 1940, in Hampshire, Tennessee to the late Dallas L. Z. Hall and Hulda B. Hall. Walter transitioned into his new life on Saturday, August 10, 2024, peacefully in his sleep.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his, wives, Daisy Hall and Shirley Hall and his brother, Dallas Eugene Hall.
Walter was educated in the Maury County Public School System and graduated from Clark Training High School in 1956. He attended Columbia State Community College for two years and received specialized training with the Columbia Police Department. He loved spending time with family, cooking, fishing, coffee, watching baseball and football, fish on Friday nights and playing Bid Whist.
Walter served two years in the United States Army before starting at the Columbia Police Department on August 24, 1970. He graduated from Tennessee Law Enforcement Academy in 1971. He received Association of Life Underwriters Officer of the Year in 1985. Walter was recognized in February of 1990 in observance of Black History month for his law enforcement involvement with his community. He was appointed Supervisor of Honor Guard in February of 1992. He was recognized for life saving action in July of 1994 for utilizing the Heimlich technique on a choking woman at the Pizza Hut. Walter was promoted to Sergeant on December 17, 1975, assigned to Detectives on July 19, 1976, and promoted to Lieutenant on June 10, 1988. He was appointed Honor Guard Commander in February of 1992 and appointed SWAT commander in April of 1996. Walter served as Interim Assistant Chief of Police in August of 1999 to March of 2001. Walter retired from the Columbia Police Department on August 31, 2001. After retiring from the Columbia Police Department, he continued to work as a Probation Officer and then as a Court Officer at the Maury County Courthouse.
Walter was baptized at a young age and was a member of New Hope Primitive Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He became an ordained minister in September of 2000. Walter later became a member of St. Ruth Primitive Baptist Church and later he affiliated with McNairy Hill United Primitive Baptist Church. He serviced as Secretary for the Iron Side Primitive Baptist Association. Later he became the Vice Moderator and years later, he became the Moderator of the Association. He was the Pastor of Mt. Paran Primitive Baptist Church in Nashville, Tennessee for a little less than ten years. After leaving Mt. Paran, he became the Pastor of St. James Primitive Baptist Church (Cooper Bottom) in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee. St. James Primitive Baptist Church became a member of the Big Harpeth Primitive Baptist Association.
Walter leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted stepdaughters, Sylvia (Jerome) Perry, Lisa (Johnny) Jones and Cynthia Frierson and one stepson, Benton Frierson. He also leaves his brother, William (Malinda) Hall and sister, Helen Sharp (Michael Sneed), his grandchildren, Patrick (LaTasha) Perry, Jason Frierson, Markey Cathey, Ashley Frierson, Demetria Frierson, Brittney (Maurice) Yarbrough, Justin (Ashley) Jones and Quinton Jones, and fifteen great grandchildren. He also leaves sisters-in-law, Cherry Jones, Debra Johnson, and one brother-in-law, Ricky Bellaphant, a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and numerous friends.
A visitation will be held on Friday, August 16, 2024, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Home with Honor Guard provided by the Columbia Police Department. He will have a final ride with family on Saturday, August 17, 2024, in Downtown Columbia beginning at 1:00 PM and will be brought back to Heritage Funeral Home where there will be a visitation until the service hour at 2:00 PM. Following the service, he will be laid to rest in the Garden of Freedom in Maury Memorial Gardens with Military Honors provided by the Columbia Police Department. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
