Mr. William Glen Cates, age 82, a resident of Columbia, passed away Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
A funeral service will be held on Friday at 2PM at Heritage Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Golden officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 4-8PM and again on Friday from 1-2PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Born on January 13, 1937 in Lawrence County, Glen was the son of the late Lucious Ollie Cates and the late Rosie Fralix Cates Daughtry. He enjoyed his work as a carpenter and was of the Pentecostal faith. He had a green thumb; any seed he planted would grow! Glen loved flowers and working in them. He also enjoyed fishing and deer hunting. He was an avid George Jones gospel music fan.
He is survived by daughters: Debbie Oliver, Donna Terry, Diane Brown, Dawne Cates all of Columbia; sisters: Roxie Fralix of Pulaski, Alice Golden of Mt. Pleasant, Gethel Russell of Lewisburg, Lenda Taylor of Mt. Pleasant, Shirley (Doug) Graham of Memphis; brothers: Bobby (Faye) Cates of Georgia, Jeff Cates of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren: Darrell Cates, Jason Oliver, Dustin Jett, Brandon Jett, Austin Brown, Matthew Brown, Chelsey Hickman, Shane Chatman, Cody Terry, Corey Terry; and seventeen great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Jewell Guthrie Cates; and siblings: Eunie Adams, Rebecca Smith, and L.O. Cates.
Pallbearers will be: Darrell Cates, Jason Oliver, Dustin Jett, Brandon Jett, Austin Brown, Matthew Brown, Wayne Hickman, and Philip Devore.
Honorary pallbearers will include: Shane Chatman, Cody Terry, Corey Terry, and Brandon Cates.
