Hal Edward Gibson, age 91, a resident of Santa Fe Pike in Columbia, passed away Monday, January 2, 2023, at NHC Maury Regional Transitional Care Center.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 6, 2023, at 1:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Home with Rick Points officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. A visitation will also be held on Friday from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Born on May 12, 1931, in Hampshire, Tennessee, Hal was the son of the late Willie Guy Gibson and the late Grace Johnson Gibson. He worked twenty-four years at Union Carbide before becoming co-owner of Gibson Brothers Coal Yard where he worked for fifteen years. The coal yard later became Gibson Brothers Scrap Metal, where he was co-owner for twenty-eight years. Hal’s passion was fishing and camping, and he also enjoyed hunting. He was an avid sports enthusiast, especially football and boxing. Hal was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his children, Sharon Sewell (Thomas Pepple) of Columbia, Michael (Tina Davidson) Gibson of Columbia, grandchildren, Justin Sewell, Matthew (Melissa) Lynch, Brandon Gibson (Heather Carter), Karita Harris, Sarah Lazarus, twenty-one great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Gibson on February 5, 2011, daughter, Deborah Jean Roberts, grandchildren, T.J. Sewell, Jennifer Gladden, great grandchild, J.C. Coffee, and siblings, Helen Reed, Willard Gibson, L.V. Gibson, Melvin Gibson, Eva Mae Gibson Crock, and Charlie Gibson.
Pallbearers will be Christopher Gibson, Brandon Gibson, Matthew Lynch, Eli Harris, Justin Sewell, and Michael Wayne Gibson.
